The Language of Interaction: Quantitative Tools from Engineering and Computer Science

This summer school will focus on an applied introduction to computational methods for studying linguistic behavior during interaction, including both semantic and acoustic elements. The target audience is researchers in psychology, psychiatry, and engineering who are interested in learning quantitative tools for studying language in dyadic interactions.  Although the presentation will focus on dyadic interaction, the concepts and methods can be extended to linguistic interactions with more members.  Examples will primarily focus on two types of dyadic interactions from clinical psychology and psychiatry: a) conversations between therapists and clients during psychotherapy, and b) conversations between partners in intimate relationships. The summer school will emphasize a conceptual introduction and overview of these computational approaches and their application to substantive questions. There will also be optional software sessions on some days for individuals who wish to gain experience with the programming necessary for implementing these methods with various forms of  data.
