Thera and Minoan Crete. New insights into two'cultures of disaster'

In the beginning of the Late Bronze Age, Thera and Minoan Crete experienced an intensive interaction which left clear traces in the material culture. This period found an abrupt end by the eruption of the Thera volcano which destroyed the flourishing settlement of Akrotiri and had a serious impact on the neighboring island of Crete. The symposium focuses on the time before, during and after this dramatic natural disaster aspiring to illuminate the most basic aspects of the complex relationship between both island communities and the environmental, economic, social and cultural effects of the volcanic eruption. A special emphasis will be given on new finds and scientific results from the recent archaeological work on both Aegean islands.
